Classes

Currently I am not teaching regular classes for singers as I have been busy working on opera productions myself.  But I would like to start them up again, and I’m also available to give sessions to organisations and schools.  Please contact me if you’re interested in having me hold classes or a workshop for your group, or individually.  And if you have any thoughts about where and when I could hold regular sessions, let me know!

I am leaving the information below for when you want to attend yoga classes, either with me or elsewhere.

What to bring and wear

Studios often have mats for you to use.  However, if you prefer, you can bring your own.  You can also purchase mats from me – just let me know in advance.  Or talk to me if you want some information on what kind of mats are available.  I don’t recommend mats that you can buy from the $2 shop as they can be flimsy / very slippery.

Wear comfortable clothing such as T-shirt and cropped pants / shorts / tights.  Not too baggy, so that you won’t get your feet caught up in those harem pants and fall over!  Not too tight and skimpy that you feel self-conscious or constricted.  Preference is for bare feet, although there are some non-slip yoga socks on the market.

Bring some layers with you – you can always start with some layers on and take them off as you warm up, then layer back on as we slow down towards the end of the practice.

Bring a towel if you like – if you tend to sweat a lot.  The classes are definitely not hot yoga and although they can be strength-building, it won’t be like doing an aerobic class.

Straps, blocks, eyebags and blankets are usually available for you to use at studios.

You are welcome to bring a water bottle for sips of water – try not to have too cold water!

Before a class

Try not to eat too close to a class. Food in your tummy might make you feel sluggish and uncomfortable doing some poses.  Often they say “don’t eat 2 hours before a class” but it’s really up to the individual.  No point swooning in class due to low blood sugar!  If you tend to get too hungry, especially with the class being in the evening, then try having something light maybe up to half an hour before class. A banana, cup of soup… that sort of thing.

At the class

If you haven’t filled in a health form / waiver, please do so.  The information on the health form is kept confidential and is for my reference only. Also, if you have any medical conditions that day (anything from a headache to injuries) do let me know so that I can keep watch and offer alternatives where I think they are more suitable.

Always listen to your body.  You alone realy know how you are feeling, physically, mentally and emotionally.  I will observe you and look after you as much as possible, but I’m not psychic!  If you are feeling any pain, then ease off from what you are doing.  Pain is bad.  Discomfort, on the other hand, can be something you work your way through to improve, strengthen, build. Checck how you’re breathing too, througout the class.  Apart from being absolutely necessary for singing, your breath can be a gauge as to how you are.  If you find you are struggling for breath, then perhaps you are exerting yourself too much!  Again, ease off and take things back to your own pace.

Feel free to ask questions!  I will answer where I can, and will research for you if I don’t have the answers. Remember, I am here to help.
